Your Social Media Cheat Sheet

Young pretty woman using social media on her tablet computer

Getting the exact right attention for your business on social media means knowing where you should be putting your focus for best return. Depending on your business, and whether you are B2B or B2C, you are going to want to focus your efforts on the platform where your potential clients are hanging out. Here is what I have learned about the most popular platforms, who hangs out there, how your business can use it, what and when to post, and more.

 Facebook

Who are you trying to reach

Men and Women, ages 18-65

What is the purpose

Facebook is a large social network where the basic purpose is posting interesting items, pictures, and videos, including using it for message exchange, sharing opinions and views, and inspiring others with quotes and reminders. Facebook is great for business-to-consumer products and services, getting more exposure for your brand, and building customer relations for your products and services.

When

The best time to post is 6-8am or 2-5pm

Where

www.facebook.com

How

  1. Create a profile, or create a new page on your profile to promote your business.
    1. You can create a separate personal profile only for business, but this isn’t advised, since all one has to do is search for you to find both. Better to create a business page and don’t link it to your personal page.
  2. Find friends – people you know, or friends of friends. Accept friend requests from those you know, or who are friends with others you know.
  3. Once your business page is created, ask your friends to follow your business page.
  4. Find interesting content, including visual content such as pictures, videos, infographics, etc. and post them to your business page, and occasionally (1-2 times per week, posting something non-salesy to your personal profile).
  5. Post various and ever-changing subjects and information, all relevant to your field or industry.
  6. Repeat 2-5 over and over. Ideally, you will post 5-10 times per week, but even more is ok, especially when you are posting fun and interesting content that people enjoy.
  7. Regularly (once per month) post to your other social media that you are on Facebook and ask them to follow your page.

Twitter

Who are you trying to reach

Men and Women, ages 18-30

What is the purpose

Text-based platform for short (140 characters or less) posts – either information or links. Allows one to quickly and concisely interact with followers, clients, and brands. Followers come and go regularly, so the idea is to always be following others relevant to your purpose and goal for using. You’ll want to follow and interact with influencers in your industry, as well as those that are active in it. Share the content of others if it’s relevant to your purpose. Twitter is good for events that generate a lot of discussion and interaction.

When

The best time to post is 1-3pm, but it’s so fast moving, so almost any other time can work

Where

www.twitter.com

How

  1. Create a twitter handle, which can be your name or business name.
  2. Find and follow others in your field of interest.
  3. Interact with your followers, especially influencers in your field.
  4. Retweet their tweets, taking time to thank them directly by putting their handle in the retweet.
  5. Post your own tweets, using the 80/20 rule (explained below).
  6. Repeat 2-5 over and over. With Twitter, there is no maximum suggested number of tweets. You can repost, but make sure you are reposting at different times on different days.
  7. Post to your other social media that you are on Twitter and ask them to follow you.

LinkedIn

Who are you trying to reach

Men and women, ages 30-65

What is the purpose

LinkedIn is a great platform to use when you have a business-to-business solution, especially professional services. It’s a wonderful place to connect with other, like-minded professionals, and a great place to search out other professionals for support and assistance. You can pitch your product or service here, but it has to be very friendly and positive, never pushy or aggressive.

When

The best time to post is 7-8:30am or 5-6pm

Where

www.linkedin.com

How

Create a profile on LinkedIn.

  1. The more information you can provide and communicate about yourself and your work, the better. It will make you look uber professional, and will show that you care by taking the time to provide the information.
  2. You can also create a page on your profile for your business, or not. People use LinkedIn for business, so they know will why you are there.
  3. You need to search out and then send a request to connect with someone, and likewise, you will start to receive messages from those that want to connect with you. It’s not necessary to know someone, but you should be able see a relevant business reason to be connected with them.
  4. Post various and ever-changing content, all relevant to your field or industry. Make sure to include visual content. Occasionally (maybe once or twice a week) browse your feed (the page you see when you log in) and like, share or otherwise, interact with your connections.
  5. Repeat 4-5. Ideally, you will post 5-7 times per week.
  6. Occasionally, reach out directly to some of your connections regarding something specific – a request for information, an opinion, an offer to help them in their business, etc.
  7. In return, it’s ok to tell them about your business purpose, but be casual, not forceful.

Google+

Who are you trying to reach

Mostly Men, ages 45-55

What is the purpose

Google+ is a great platform to use when you are peddling products and services with a strong reliance on SEO values. It’s operated by Google and provides a place for someone with a profile to post status updates, and connect with others in Circles, Hangouts and Communities. It can be integrated with other Google applications, but can be cumbersome for small business owners.

When

The best time to post is 9-11am

Where

  6. Find interesting content, including visual content such as pictures, videos, infographics, etc. and post them to your business page. Make sure to “+1” your post so it goes public.
  7. Post various and ever-changing subjects and information, all relevant to your field or industry.
  8. Repeat 3-7 over and over. Ideally, you will post 5-10 times per week, but even more is ok, especially when you are posting fun and interesting content that people enjoy.
  9. Regularly (once per month) post to your other social media that you are on Google+ and ask them to follow your page.

A few words of warning:

  • If your goal is to use social media to expand your business, you should not be posting personal information, pictures that aren’t relevant to your goals, or opinions (yours or others) on controversial subjects.
  • Remember the 80/20 rule. Typically, 80% of your content should NOT be selling your product or service, but instead you should provide information, interesting facts, and entertain. 20% of your posts should be “sales” related, but remember that it’s hard to do a hard sell (an aggressive sales tactic that is used when you are fully aware that your potential client wants and needs your product or service, but is hesitating in some way. It’s “going in for the kill” and not taking no for an answer.) on social media, so you need to take the sales approach of providing a consultative approach, proactively helping your client solve a problem in a way that’s comfortable and non-threatening for them. Use the 80% to really get buy in on the 20%.
  • Always, always, ALWAYS stay positive and respectful. No one likes to hear complaining, finger-pointing or criticism of others. Be encouraging and remember your mothers rule: If you don’t have something nice to say, say nothing at all.
  • Never, never, NEVER be pushy or aggressive. It’s fine to have confidence in what you are doing, and it’s wonderful to believe your product is THE BEST (it likely is!) but it’s not ok to force it on someone else. Best to educate, inform, persuade and do it all with a smile on your face.
